Having a fireplace in the home is something that is sought after by most people. A fireplace creates a traditional, warm and comfortable living space. No matter what room in the home you have a fireplace in, it is definitely a nice feature to have and especially so during the colder fall and winter months. You can purchase a fireplace to be built-in to the wall of a room or freestanding, but you can also build your own.
The first step to building a fireplace is coming up with the design. If this is your first time building a fireplace, you may want to print off or purchase a design to follow. This gives you a template to work with and basically guides you through the process so there is less of a chance for error.
Gather together the supplies and tools you need. The fireplace mantels are best to start with because they are the topping piece and making them first gives it time to dry properly before moving it and trying to install it on the fireplace unit. The best idea is to build the mantel out of wood and then cover it with tile or other building material.
Set up the bricks one by one, using mortar in between each, in the design you want. If you are making a built-in fireplace, it is best to work in a corner space as this gives you more room to work with. Make sure you hold onto each brick for at least a few seconds before letting go, to ensure the strongest hold.
Purchase some fireplace accessories such as fireplace screens and doors to help keep flames inside and prevent them from flickering out onto your hard floor or carpet. You should also get a fireplace poking set so you have something to poke the fire with and keep it going, or damper it to put it out a bit.
