Landscaping - Backyard Structures, Helpful Tips & Ideas

Image : http://www.flickr.com

You're in the middle of landscaping your new backyard, or maybe finally having the chance to revamp your old one. A big part of your plans is to add a backyard structure for that central and finishing piece. But how do you choose when there are so many options, styles, and colors? There are a few things you're going to have to consider.

Neighborhood: If you're in any sort of neighborhood in, there are likely HOA restrictions or rules on what you can actually put in your yard. Make sure to double check what's appropriate in structure and style before purchasing a backyard structure. Another thing to keep in mind is just what LOOKS good. Blending in with the rest of the neighborhood's overall appearance is important, but that doesn't mean you can't choose something that still captures attention.
Weather: Climate is definitely something to think about when choosing a backyard structure in. Wherever the structure is located, make sure that it will be able to stand on it's own two feet in the environment and still look beautiful. Can it stand the heat, rain, snow, or whatever may come your yard's way? I live in Utah and the weather is definitely a factor not to toss out the window. You can even use this to your advantage. That is, backyard structures do not have to be summer use only! If say you decide to have a pergola installed, this can double as a display for a Christmas nativity, or a Thanksgiving display. Keep this in mind when deciding if you want to position your structure where it can be visible from the road or whether you want it to be your own private display.
Personal Style: The signature home style in my home state is the rambler. Make sure to select a Pergola, or Arbor, or whatever structure you decide upon, that is all your own. Obviously don't forget the points above when it comes to blending with the neighborhood. However, your yard is one area that you can deviate to some degree as long as you stick with the covenants and ordinances of your area. Ask yourself, Do you like dark or light wood? Does it complement your neighborhood? Curves? Straight lines? Intricate or simple designs? Take into account the style that is already in your home. And above all, make sure whatever you choose is something that you'll love for years to come and not something that's just the current fad.

Now that you have some things to mull over in your mind, you are well on your way to choosing the perfect backyard structure for your location. The style of a backyard can tell you a lot about a person and their likes and dislikes, so making sure you choose the right central piece is vital. Lastly, when working on your backyard remember to just have fun! Your backyard is about to become exciting and beautiful!

The Best Places to Buy Fireplace Fuel and Accessories

Image : http://www.flickr.com

You finally have the fireplace and fireplace supplies you have always wanted. You dream of sitting around it with family and friends on long winter evenings all snug and warm has come true. You have had the chimney or vents properly cleaned and inspected and you are all set to go...except where do you get quality fireplace supplies?

What about buying fireplace accessories like ash buckets, tool sets, a fireplace remote control or fireplace covers? If you have ever wondered how to find the best place for your fireplace supplies then you should read this article on how to find the right vendors of fireplace fuels and accessories locally.

Finding Quality Supplies Locally

Have you ever thought out loud, "How do I buy firewood?" or "Where can I buy coal for my fireplace?" if you are like many new fireplace owners, these questions and others like it can be very frustrating. After all most modern city dwellers don't have a quick and easy access to wood or coal.

But with some research you should be able to find enough firewood to suit your needs. First you should determine your actual fuel needs. If you are using firewood, you should map out how many days you plan on using your fireplace and how many hours you plan to having burning.

A good stack of wood (3-6 pieces) can burn anywhere from 4 to 8 hours depending on various factors like your fireplace design, wood stacking, air drafts, etc. So once you determine how many days you plan on burning your wood...say you want to burn a fire every weekend from November to March. Roughly that would be about 16 weeks or 12-20 pieces of firewood per week. It's been estimated that there is approximately 600 or so pieces of timber in a "cord" of firewood. Firewood is traditionally sold in "cords".

In the US, a cord has a standard measurement of 128 cubic feet or pile of wood stacked 4ft high by 4ft wide by 8 ft long. This is basically 2 full-size pick-up truck loads of wood or 4 compact pick-up truck loads. An average cord of wood can weigh around 5600 lbs (give or take for moisture).

A smaller quantity of wood is the "face" cord or a "rick" of wood which is roughly 1/3 the size of standard cord. Or you can buy firewood by the "pick-up truck load" which varies depending on the size of the truck bed. As you can see, if you buy more than an even a small amount of wood, you will soon have to find adequate space to store it safely. What about coal? While you can use coal in certain fireplaces (coal burns hotter than wood), in many US urban areas you will have to check with local air regulations concerning using it and basically finding coal for domestic use is becoming extremely difficult.

Once you have determined your fuel needs, check all your local fireplace retailers and dealers. Some fireplace dealers and merchants may know who in your area provides households with fire wood. Next check the classified listings in your local newspapers or on an online merchant directory that serves your region. Local Dealers are the Best Places to Look for Your Supplies & Accessories. Many vendors also have parts and offer technical support for many different fireplace makers and fireplace inserts.

Depending on your local dealer, you should have access to a wide array of fireplace tool sets, fire screens, grates, log holders and ash cans and hearth cleaning equipment and fireplace supplies.

Decorating a Den Or Family Room With You in Mind

Image : http://www.flickr.com

A den or family room is usually less formal than a living room, and designed for the family to use in order to enjoy reading, watching television or other activities. A den, instead of being decorated to impress others, should be decorated the way you want it - in a way that makes you feel the most comfortable and relaxed. This article offers tips and ideas for making your den a special room that is meant specifically for the family.

Many people opt to make their den or family room small and cozy, while others like a large, spacious den with plenty of room. Either way, you will get some great ideas here.

Furniture

Every den should have a sofa, bookshelves and a couple of chairs with ottomans. If you or someone in your family is a voracious reader, consider floor to ceiling bookshelves flanking both sides of a fireplace. Your television may be kept in an armoire, so that when you are not watching it can be hidden from view. You may want to consider an entertainment center or office set-up in one corner if your family often plays games, listens to music or uses the computer.

Accents and Accessories

Plants make any room more attractive, and the den is no exception. Use greenery to decorate the room, and consider several light sources for the ones who love to read. A floor lamp placed beside a chair makes the perfect place to cozy up and read a book. Table lamps on each end of the sofa further enhance the cozy, relaxed atmosphere. Overhead light should be avoided as it can be harsh and glaring. For the walls, decorate with pictures and prints that reflect your own tastes and personality.

Color Choices and Window Treatments

Since this room is to be used mostly by family, the colors you choose should be those you love. If you like light, neutral colors, by all means go for it! You may prefer darker hues, such as rich burgundies or deep blues. These are fine too - just remember, darker colors will make the room appear smaller.

As far as windows go, you can use any type of blinds, shades, drapes or curtains you like. If you want the room to appear light and airy, go for mini-blinds or shades in light, neutral colors that can be drawn up when you like. If you prefer a more private room, heavier drapes or boldly patterned curtains are good choices. You may even want to consider wood shutters that can be pushed back when you like.

Light walls look great with darker upholstery and leather. Any tones that complement or contrast each other will further add depth and interest to the room. Just remember, this room is specially made for you and your family to enjoy, so make it your own! Use all of the colors, fabrics, and accessories that are your favorites to make it a room in which you will truly enjoy relaxing after a hard day's work.

Hot Tips on How to Spot Good Damp Proofing Contractors

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Although damp proofing contractors do not perform the most glamorous part of a building project, their selection is essential for a successful construction. Generally they must treat or repair woodwork, brickwork, floors or roofs in order to prevent fungal infections, insect attacks or dampness. Their customer range is formed by people with commercial or residential properties.

DPC contractors are normally associated with remedial works to a property that is suffering from damp from a failed damp proof course or other.

There are many advantages associated with damp proofing, and you must understand that you need to find some good DPC contractors during the construction of the house, not after. Many professionals recommend that damp proofing treatment is used on the exterior walls during the construction process. For example, this can refer to using liquid asphalt painted over the outside part of the walls. This will help seal the moisture out once the house is finished. When looking for damp proofing contractors, take note that damp proofing is different from waterproofing a house. Damp proofing can prevent the dampness from affecting the house but it cannot stop water leaking in through cracks. As you can see, it is a must-do step as is any construction project, and you need to work with the best professionals. I am sure you do not want any unpleasant surprises after your new home party. Therefore, why not prevent it?

A professional contractor can always provide you effective solutions to keep damp at bay. Companies specializing in damp proofing have an extensive knowledge and expertise when it comes to tools, chemical systems and products. They can easily prevent the problem from reoccurring. The question is: how can we find the best contractors?

Recommendations

When it comes to choosing reliable contractors one of the key elements are recommendations. Ask your friends, co-workers or local contractors for recommendations. If no one has heard of a certain company, there are two reasons: it is either a new business or they have few clients. When a business is successful, clients are attracted and prices are convenient. Make a list with the top three best recommendations and start asking for prices and services.

Range of services provided

Some people are trying to solve all damp issues from one hit, and it would be nice if you find damp proofing contractors that can provide the whole range of related services, from dampness to insect attacks or brickwork.

Quality of service

An experienced DPC firm always takes a case as a unique case and looks for the most convenient and performing solutions for the property. This is why sometimes big companies may lose the advantage. A smaller, yet experienced team of damp proofing contractors can focus on your needs specifically while taking their time for finishing the work.

Tools and materials used for this type of remedial work must be modern and effective. There are new products on the market released every day. Good damp proofing contractors work with the latest products, so make sure you ask what they use before hiring them.

Price can be a good indicator of how experienced damp proofing contractors are, but there are exceptions. Try to find a balanced offer which is not too cheap and not too expensive.

If you are facing damp problems at your home or you need a team to damp proof your property, start by browsing the Internet. It is fast, easy and it provides a lot of useful information. Whether the damp is rising damp, caused by condensation, insects, rain penetration, an experienced team of contractors will surely come with a convenient solution.
