It's not until you go out looking for a fireplace screen that you find out just how many options are available. There are big screens, small screens, brass, copper and iron screens. Regardless of the type of fireplace screen you choose there are five critical points to consider before choosing a brand or style of screen.

We all know just how dangerous fireplaces can be without proper supervision. If only takes an instant for a dangerous situation to occur if adequate precautions are not taken into account. Size
When it comes to selecting a correctly size fireplace screen, consideration needs to be given to all areas around the heating area. This means including the area immediately in front of the fire as well as areas to the sides.

As a general rule, the screen should be at least 12 inches away from the heat source in all directions. This means when you are measuring the fireplace for a screen include 12 inches on both sides of the fireplace edge and 12 inches to the front. Generally the height of the screen should be a minimum of 5 inches higher than the fireplace.

Stability
When checking the sizing and design of fireplace screens make sure you carefully consider stability issues. There are some screens the while they can act as barriers, they are very easy to bend and manipulate. This can be the case particularly with bi-fold or multifold screens.

As they are designed to bend and fold they do not always hold the required shape when placed in front of a fire. Ensure that any screen can withstand unforeseen knocks and remain in place. It may be that a fastening mechanism is required to attach the screen to the fireplace surround.

Fireplace screens are an integral part of ensuring that your home not only looks good but remains as safe as possible. Homeowners should consider these a necessity, not an optional extra. fireplaces took a major leap forward in 1678 when Prince Rupert, nephew of Charles1, raised the fireplace grate.This increased airflow greatly improving the efficiency of the burning fire.

Fireplace grates provide many benefits and a hot burning fire is one.  When the logs are elevated off the firebox floor, air is pulled from under the burning logs creating a draw.  This causes a cycle.  The draw of air burns the logs hotter and the hotter the logs burn the more it draws.  This causes the fire to burn cleaner which means less pollution and less creosote in your chimney reducing the chance of a chimney fire.  A hot fire also means more heat for you.  When the grate is positioned towards the back of the firebox,  the heat hits the slant of the fire back.  The slant of the fire back slants forward reflecting the heat out into the room.

Another benefit of fireplace grates is they securely hold the burning logs in place so they are not rolling out onto your floor.  This benefit should be obvious.  Fireplace grates will also keep the burning logs compact which makes them "feed" off one another instead of having them spread out burning independently.

Fireplace grates also make lighting the fire easy.  Simply crumple up newspaper and stuff it under the  grate.  Next, put  kindling on the fireplace grate.  On top of the kindling place medium size pieces of wood and on top of that place a log or two.  Presto, a full size fire.  The importance of the fireplace grate in all of this is to keep the weight of all the wood off the paper, which would smother it, not allowing it to get hot enough to ignite the kindling.

When measuring your firebox for a grate, simply measure the back of the firebox.  This is usually the narrowest point if the colvings (sides) slant in.  Make sure the is at least 2-4 inches of clearance on each side. The fireplace grate should have 6-8 inches clearance front to back to keep it as far back as possible away from the doors or screen. Fireplace grates have a long history and are still as important today for many good reasons.

Tips on Measuring and Your Woodworking Plans

I watch so many folks struggle when it comes to making accurate and uniform measurements and therefore cuts. When it comes to your woodworking projects there are a few simple routines that will make your time in the shop more enjoyable. If you are a novice in the woodworking profession don't worry. You can learn this craft. Yes you will have a lot of trial and error, but that is ok. The best thing you could do is find yourself a guide and take advantage of the years of experience through trial and error.

So you have a set of plans for your next project. All the material is stacked up in the shop or like most people on the garage floor in the way of the wife's car. The next morning you get up and rearing to go. Out comes the trusty tape and you make your first cuts, Darn they don't match. Been there and done that.

Well here is the solution. Kick back, take your time and learn to measure your material accurately the first time. Enjoy yourself and do it right the first time. Here are a few tricks to help you.

* If your measurements are less than 12" get in the habit of using a rigid metal ruler. Put away your tape for now. The metal ruler will lay flat on your work, it doesn't bend or have a riveted end. Makes a world of difference.

* If your measurements are over 12" your tape is fine remembering that two tapes will seldom read the same. Always use the same tape through your complete project. A very good habit to get into is burn an inch when measuring.This takes out the play at the rivets. The more accurate you are the the better. If a friend is helping you make sure the tapes match. Your trying to be as consistent as you can.

* Make sure the end you are measuring from is square. I don't know how many times I will see someone pulling a tape and not checking this. If anything put a new square cut on the board. Wood well very rarely be square on both ends. Take your time and get a good edge.

* What kind of pencil are you using? I suggest you use a mechanical pencil. But you say the lead is breaking all the time. Instead of holding the pencil straight up and down, hold it on an angle. You will get a nice clean mark. Remember be consistent. The mark will be the same over and over again.

* Get in the habit of marking all your cut lines with a square. This gives you a visual reference to your cut line. If you just put a scratch, you are pretty much just eyeballing your cut. We want to be as accurate as we possibly can.
